That Tuesday in August where every lift lined up perfectly in Portland
I run a small mobile crane outfit out of Portland, and last Tuesday was just one of those freak days. The morning job was a rooftop AC unit replacement, the kind that usually takes 4 hours of fiddling, and we had it set in 90 minutes because the building manager had already cleared the roof and marked the pad. Then a quick pick for a fence company putting in those big cedar posts, and the load chart was so simple I didn't even need my calculator. The wind was dead calm, which never happens here, and the street closure was granted without the usual two-hour argument. I even had time to grab a proper lunch at the food carts instead of eating in the cab. By 4 PM I was done and home before my kid got off the bus. Has anyone else ever had a day where the permits, the weather, and the crew all clicked like that, or is it always a fight somewhere? It's got me wondering if I should try scheduling more jobs for Tuesdays specifically.
August in Portland with no wind is like finding a unicorn, so that alone probably saved you an hour on the rooftop pick. The real trick I've picked up is that Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are gold for permits because the city counter guys aren't buried yet from the Monday rush, and the fence and AC crews haven't fallen behind on their own schedules. I wouldn't hardwire your whole book to Tuesdays though, because one rainout and you're jammed into a Friday with everyone else fighting for the same street closure. What I do is keep Mondays light for small stuff and stack the bigger picks midweek, so when a day clicks like yours did you're not wiped out by 2 PM. That building manager marking the pad ahead of time is the part most people miss, a good handoff on site beats any amount of planning in the office.
