Swung a load too fast yesterday and learned why the old guy yells at me

I was moving some steel beams on a job site in Portland and figured I'd speed up the swing to get through the day quicker. The load started swaying bad and I nearly clipped a parked pickup. My foreman told me I was making his job harder by not dialing in the pendulum motion first. Any other guys here have a specific trick for controlling load swing on a luffing jib?

The trick nobody talks about is how your own body mechanics affect the swing (it's not just the crane). Luffing jibs have a different pivot point than conventional ones, so the pendulum is way more sensitive to any small movement you make. Try gripping the controls with just your fingertips instead of your whole hand, it helps you make smoother corrections without overcorrecting. Also, focus on your breathing while you work because if you hold your breath you'll tense up and that tension transfers right into the joystick. Some guys on the coast swear by counting Mississippi's during the swing to time the pendulum right, weirdly it works if you practice it slow. Just remember that the load is always going to move a little (physics is a jerk like that), so your goal is to match the rhythm instead of fighting it.
