Spent 3 hours trying to level a tower crane on a sloped site in Seattle last week

The ground was way softer than the survey said, so we had to bring in extra cribbing and re-check everything twice, which made me wonder if anyone has a better method for a quick site check before the crane rolls in?

My buddy's crew got burned by a similar thing (they use a cheap soil probe now, like the kind for gardening). It's not perfect, but it gives a heads-up if the ground is total mush.

@smith.anna That's a solid tip. My team once tried to save money by eyeballing it, and we ended up parking a skid steer in a hidden spring. The thing sank like a cartoon anvil. Now we just jab a metal rod in the ground first. It looks silly, but it beats a three-hour winch recovery in the rain.
