Picked up a useful tip from an old hand at the union hall yesterday

He was talking about how to level up a crawler crane on soft ground without sinking the pads. Said to lay down two layers of timber mats crisscrossed instead of one thick layer. Has anyone else tried this method on a muddy job site?

Did you ask him about the gap between the two layers? I figure if you leave some space between the mats, it might let water drain out instead of pooling right under the crane. Or does it really matter if you're just trying to stop the pads from punching down in mud?

Gaps just let mud seep up between layers and defeat the whole point.
