Hot take: that spinner Lufkin tape trick is the only way to measure jib height solo

Honestly I was fighting with a busted laser level for 2 hours on a job site near the docks last month. Tried using a string line and a handheld light but the wind kept throwing everything off. Ngl a buddy told me to hook the tape end to the hook and spin it while I walked back - got a clean reading in under 5 minutes. Has anyone else found a use for that trick on a boom truck setup?

Go easy on that trick if you're using a boom truck instead of a straight jib setup. The weight and swing of the boom can make the tape spin weird and snap back at you if you're not careful. I've seen guys get whacked in the face trying that on a knuckle boom near the water where the wind is gusting. It's a solid method for sure, just make sure you've got a good grip and maybe wear some gloves. Also, check your tape hook is tight - a loose one will drop the tape right when you don't want it to.
