A load chart refresher from a retiree I met at the parts counter

Ran into an old guy at the equipment dealer last Tuesday, been running cranes since the 70s, and we got to talking about a lift I did the day before. I mentioned how I always double check the chart on my 80 ton before picking, but he asked me if I ever actually look at the boom angle limits for the specific radius, not just the weight. That hit different because I realized I was treating the chart like a yes or no checklist instead of a curve, you know? He showed me on his phone how a 5 degree swing in boom angle can drop capacity by nearly 4,000 lbs at certain radii, which I never fully appreciated. Since then I've been rechecking my notes and practicing with the load moment indicator more on slow days. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple conversation made you go back to the basics? I'd love to hear if you've got a habit that keeps you sharp on the numbers.
