Showerthought: the $3 thrift store game that ruined our whole night

Picked up a beat up copy of a split screen racing game at a garage sale in Fresno for $3, thinking hey, cheap fun for game night. Turned out the disc was scratched so bad it froze every 4 minutes, right in the middle of the final lap, and my buddy threw a cushion at the TV. We laughed it off but then spent 40 minutes trying to clean it with toothpaste like some internet trick, which of course did nothing. Lesson learned: always check the underside before handing over cash, even for pocket change. So what do you all do to test used couch co-op discs before you buy them, or am I the only one who keeps falling for this?
