Tried mixing developer with a different brand of toner after my supplier ran out...

I was in a panic last Friday when my usual brand was backordered, but mixing 20 volume from one line with a purple toner from another actually gave me the coolest ash blonde I've ever gotten on my client without any patchiness, has anyone else tried mixing brands when you're in a bind?

That 20 volume with purple toner combo is interesting... what developer brand did you use with it?

Honestly, I’ve done sketchier mixing in a pinch and got away with it. @laura_knight54, that 20 volume from the no-name brand with a random ash toner is a gamble that paid off weirdly well for me once too. My biggest rule is if both bottles say “cream” or “liquid” on them, you’re probably fine as long as you mix small batches first. The real trick is making sure the pH is close, or your client’s hair will turn muddy and you’ll be stripping it out at 11pm. I’ve definitely ended up with a cool silver that looked better than the name brand stuff more than once when my supplier ghosted me. Just don’t try it with anything from the drugstore, that’s where the real horror stories start.
