The 10-minute consult that made me stop over-processing every client

Had a walk-in last Tuesday, older lady, fine silver hair, wanted a full bleach and tone. I started explaining the time and cost, and she just looked at me and said, "Honey, my hair is already white. Why are we destroying it?" I sat there for a second, and she was right. She just needed a gloss and a trim. I was so stuck in my routine of doing the big transformation for everyone that I forgot to actually look at what was in front of me. Charged her $45 instead of $180, she tipped me $20 and left happy. Now I ask every new client what their actual goal is before I touch a brush, even if it's "I don't know, something different." Anyone else catch themselves doing way too much because you assumed that's what they wanted?

Man, that reminds me of a client who wanted a mullet for her wedding photos and I almost talked her out of it.
