That time a client asked me to bleach her scalp raw

Had a woman in her 40s come into the salon in Phoenix last month, insisting she wanted her roots lifted to platinum in one 90 minute session. I told her it would fry her hair, maybe even burn her scalp, but she said she'd done it before at home (yikes). She got really huffy when I refused to go above 30 volume, and she left mid-process saying I didn't know what I was doing. Has anyone else had a client push for a damaging service and then blame you for setting boundaries?

And who's really the professional here if you can't handle a simple request for light lift without acting like the hair police? The client told you she'd done it herself before, so maybe she knows her own hair better than you do. If she's willing to deal with the consequences of damaged hair or a burned scalp, isn't that her choice to make at the end of the day?

How do you even argue with that logic though, because honestly my own hair decisions have definitely been a series of questionable choices and a prayer.
