Serious question, has a client ever asked you to match their hair to a very specific food item?
A woman in my chair in Akron last Tuesday brought in a picture of a perfectly ripe avocado and said, 'I need my highlights to be this exact shade of greenish-yellow, no more, no less.'

Honestly, that sounds like a nightmare to try and match. Do they not realize hair dye and avocado flesh are two totally different things?

But that's the whole point of being a pro, isn't it? A specific color target gives you a real goal to work toward instead of just guessing. It shows the client has a clear vision, and matching unusual stuff is what makes the job interesting.

Oh, you know what, I used to be on the other side of this too. I thought color targets were just pointless nitpicking that made everything harder than it needed to be. But honestly, reading your post just clicked for me. You're right that having a real, specific thing to match gives you a clear target instead of just hoping for the best. It turns a vague request into an actual puzzle to solve, which is way more satisfying. I get now that it's not about making things difficult, it's about showing the client has a real plan and trusting you to figure it out. That actually sounds pretty rewarding now that I think about it.
