PSA: My landlord's plumber buddy made me rethink my salon's water softener setup

He told me hard water was slowly wrecking my color results by leaving mineral buildup on hair cuticles, and he showed me the inside of my pipes after just 2 years. I never realized how much city water pH was fighting my formulations. Has anyone else tested their tap water and found it messed with processing times?

My buddy Dave runs a shop in Austin and he ignored his water for 3 years. His blondes started coming out brassy and his processing times jumped by like 8 minutes. He finally tested his tap water and it was sitting at a pH of 8.4, way higher than he expected. He had to rework his whole color line and add a chelating step to every service just to get consistent results. Cost him a bunch of money and a few pissed off clients before he figured it out.

That 8.4 pH is brutal for lighteners. @william320, your buddy's the perfect example of why every shop owner should just grab a $15 pH meter before they start having issues. I've seen places that move to RO or add a water softener and magically fix their tone issues overnight.
