Hot take: balayage is not worth the price tag anymore
I did 12 balayage appointments at a salon in Austin over 2 years and watched my regrowth lines get blurrier but my toner fade faster every single time. The technique used to give that soft lived-in look, but now it just feels like a $250 way to get highlights with extra steps and a shorter halo effect. Am I the only stylist who thinks we should push clients toward foils or a lived-in root melt for the same money?

Whoa, hold on. I gotta disagree with you on this one. Balayage might not be what it was ten years ago, but the whole point of it is the custom, soft look that foils just cant match, especially on longer hair. You mentioned the regrowth lines getting blurrier like that's a bad thing, but for most of my clients, that's the whole dream, they want to stretch out their appointments and still look natural. Sounds like your salon might just be rushing the process or using bad toner, not the technique itself. I pay for the stylist's eye and how they paint it, not just the steps, and that's what gets me the lived in look you're saying is gone.
