Debate: Is layering toner over semi-permanent color a waste or a lifesaver?

I keep seeing stylists either swearing by a toner to seal in semi-permanent shades or calling it pointless since semi already deposits color. I've had clients in Nashville where the toner gave the color way more staying power but others where it just faded unevenly and looked muddy after 2 weeks. What's your experience with this trick actually working or failing?

OMG yes thank you for saying this! I've had the exact same thing happen where the toner made my semi-permanent last weeks longer, but then another time it just turned into a weird greenish cast after a few washes and I was so annoyed lol. It definitely seems like the toner's pH and the base color of the semi matter a ton, if they don't match you're basically asking for mud.
