Can we talk about my curling iron that basically exploded mid-client?

I was doing a blowout on a regular client last Wednesday, and my hot ass curling iron just started smoking and then the barrel actually cracked right in front of her face. Scared her and me both, honestly. I had to grab my backup wand from the drawer but it was a whole different size and the curl pattern came out uneven. Client was cool about it but I could tell she was a little annoyed by the time we finished. Now I'm wondering how often I should be replacing my hot tools because I've had that iron for like 4 years and I kinda thought they just lasted forever. Anyone else ever had a tool fail on them during a service? How do you know when it's time to toss something out?

My 3 year old flat iron started sparking mid service and I tossed it that same day.

Toss it if you want, @the_morgan, but a little sparking doesn't always mean the whole thing is toast. Could just be a stray hair or some dust burning off, happens all the time with older tools. You might have been fine wiping it down and keeping it going.
