Question about the 14 unplanned change orders we logged in one month on a school job in Dayton
We wrapped up a middle school addition in Dayton last spring and when I added up the change orders for our busiest month it came to 14. I thought we had maybe 6 or 7, so seeing that number on the log honestly made me sit back in my chair. Eight of them traced back to one thing: nobody locked down the door hardware spec before we framed, so every door came with a fight between the district and the fire marshal. Now I walk the spec sheet with the owner before we order anything, even if it slows down the kickoff by a week. Anyone else keep a running count of change orders per month, or am I the only one who tracks that out of curiosity?
Reminds me of a time on a church build where we spent three weeks fighting over paint colors while the drywall guys sat around. Owner kept changing his mind, then swore he never did, and the paper trail saved us. What got me was how the change orders stacked up from tiny stuff we never saw coming, not the big obvious ones. Keeping a count per month sounds like a smart habit, at least you can point to a pattern later instead of guessing. Fourteen in one month is a lot, but at least you found the one thing that caused most of it.
