Almost lost a crew member to a trench cave-in last month in Austin
We were digging a 6 foot trench for a sewer line and the foreman skipped the shoring because it was just a quick job. About 20 minutes in the west wall started sloughing off and one of my guys nearly got buried up to his waist. I stopped everything and told the crew we're done until the trench box gets here. Has anyone else had a close call like this or is my crew just too comfortable cutting corners?

...and thats exactly what my old man used to say before he got buried in a trench back in 94. He survived but his back never worked right again lol. The thing nobody talks about is how fast wet soil acts like concrete when it starts coming down on you. A trench box is cheap compared to a funeral or a lifetime of PT.
