A superintendent in Phoenix told me my daily reports were useless, and he was right
I used to write daily reports that were basically a wall of text, like 400 words on a slow Tuesday. A super on a $4M job in Phoenix looked at one and asked me who was supposed to read it. He said he only cares about three things: crew count, what got done, and what's blocking us. So now I do a 6 line template, one line per item, and I add a photo of anything I flagged. My closeout package got way easier too since the notes actually line up with the schedule dates. Anyone else have a report format that a boss or client actually liked, or do you just write what they ask for?
Man that super did you a solid and it probably stung at the time. Getting told your reports are useless is rough but he basically handed you the fix for free. Six lines and a photo is honestly all most people ever read anyway, nobody is sitting down with 400 words on a Tuesday job. The part about closeout lining up with schedule dates is the real win, that stuff saves you hours later when someone comes asking questions. Sounds like you found the format that works instead of just doing what the last guy did.
