Showerthought: saw a 20 year old slab in Wichita that looked better than one we poured 2 months ago
The old one was poured in 2004 by a crew that hand floated everything and it has almost no cracks, while our new pour from last month already has hairline cracks all over it. Started wondering if we are pushing the finish too fast these days with all the power tools, or if it comes down to that mix design from back then. Anybody else notice older flatwork holding up better than what we are putting down now?
My own two month old pour looks like a road map already so I am right there with you lol. What gets me is the older guys I know all say they used to let the mud sit longer before they even touched it with a float, and now we are out there the second it stiffens up because the schedule says so. A lot of it probably comes down to the mix too, since they ran richer cement and we are getting more water and fly ash to make it pump and finish easy. Those old crews also kept a guy on it with a hand float and a trowel all day instead of jumping straight to the power trowel. We trade speed for a slab that shrinks and cracks early, then act surprised when the 2004 pour still looks new.
