Overheard a guy at the hardware store say he uses a garden sprayer with vinegar to clean his tools, and it got me thinking about rust on trowels.

Guess he's trying to pickle his trowel for later.

Evaporust is definitely the magic stuff for bad rust. I had a 50 year old trowel that was basically orange crust and after a 24 hour soak it came out looking like it just left the factory. Just gotta rinse it really good with water afterward and oil it up immediately or it'll flash rust in like an hour.

Grant130 has the right idea, it's basically pickling. Vinegar works but it's slow. A wire brush gets the big flakes off fast. For bad rust, a quick soak in evaporust saves the metal. Then just keep them dry and oiled.
