Old timer told me to wet the subgrade before pouring and I thought he was crazy until I saw the results

Skipped wetting the base on a driveway in Phoenix last July and the slab cracked in 3 spots within a week because the ground sucked the moisture out before I could finish, has anyone else learned that lesson the hard way?

Read that same thing in a concrete forum last week, some guy in Arizona said he lost a whole slab because he didn't wet the base and the ground basically drank all the water out of the mix. Sounds like it's a super common mistake for people who don't work with desert soil all the time. Definitely gonna remember that tip if I ever pour in a dry climate.

Respectfully, I gotta push back a little here. I've poured plenty of slabs in dry hot weather without wetting the subgrade first and never had that issue. Maybe it's about technique or the mix you're using, but I figure if your concrete is properly mixed and you're moving fast enough the ground won't suck it dry before you finish.
