My $1,200 magnesium float bar was a waste, stick with the cheap one
I thought I was doing myself a favor last spring when I dropped $1,200 on a top-of-the-line magnesium float bar for a big driveway pour in Columbus. Figured the extra weight and better balance would let me finish faster and smoother, you know? First two jobs it felt great, but then the handle started getting loose and the bar itself warped a little after sitting in the sun on a hot day. My old $300 one from the hardware store never gave me that trouble, and honestly the finish came out just as good. I spent all that money chasing a tiny edge that nobody but me would ever notice. Right now I'm back to using the cheap bar and I just cleaned the expensive one and hung it on the wall as a reminder. Anyone else drop big cash on fancy tools only to go back to the basics? What's the most overpriced piece of gear you regret buying?
