Bubble level failed me on a 40 foot driveway pour

Last month in Tacoma we were screeding a long driveway and my old 4 foot level must have taken a hit on a previous job. The bubble was off by a hair, so our final grade ended up low on the garage side by about 3/4 of an inch. Spotted it when water pooled after the first rain, had to grind down the high spots and patch, took a whole afternoon. Any of you guys check your levels against a known flat slab before big pours, or do you just trust them until something like this happens?
