Warning: A static shock killed a motherboard during a RAM swap
I was helping a friend upgrade his RAM and didn't ground myself first. A little zap from my finger made the motherboard die. He had to get a new one, and I paid for it. Now I always use an anti-static strap before touching anything. What do you do to stop static from causing damage?

Yeah that "harsh lesson" is so real... I once killed a GPU just by touching the backplate after walking across carpet. Now I keep a cheap wrist strap clipped to my case frame whenever I'm building.

That replacement board probably cost you over a hundred bucks. I can't believe a tiny zap can cause that much financial pain. It's a harsh lesson for sure.
