Walked into a server room last week that still had a Compaq ProLiant from 1998 humming along
Had to swap a drive in a modern SAN at an old school downtown Milwaukee building, and in the corner was this dusty relic still running some ancient inventory app. Anyone else run into old hardware that just refuses to die?

The guy who built that app probably retired fifteen years ago and nobody wants to touch it. Those old Compaq boxes were absolute workhorses though, I've seen them run for decades without a single hiccup. It's funny how we chase the latest gear but the stuff that really works just keeps chugging along in some dusty corner. Bet that inventory system never crashes, just sits there humming like a happy little time capsule. Someone will probably have to pry it out of their cold dead hands before it finally gets replaced.

The Compaq branded stuff was built like tanks, I remember seeing one running a school district's lunch system until like 2012. So what was the actual app running on that thing, some old DOS based inventory program or a custom written database that nobody has the source code for anymore?
