Recovered a client's RAID 5 array with a $40 USB dock
Last month I had a small business client in Tacoma with a dead RAID 5 on an old Dell PowerEdge. The controller was shot, but the drives were fine. I pulled all three, hooked each to a cheap USB dock, and rebuilt the array in Linux with mdadm. It took about 6 hours but recovered every file without a recovery service. Anyone else tried this route instead of sending drives out?

Is it just me or does everyone try the cheap fix first before the expensive one, only to learn the cheap fix was the easy part?
