I called BS on thermal cameras for finding heat issues until last Tuesday
Had a server in a closet at a client site in Austin running hot for months. Swapped fans, cleaned filters, even blew out the AC vents. Nothing helped. My buddy handed me his thermal camera and I just rolled my eyes. Pointed it at the rack and saw one specific PSU was pushing 145F while the other was at 95F. Swapped that PSU and temps dropped 20 degrees. I'm buying one next week. Anyone else had a tool they ignored that turned out to be worth it?

Yeah, that "rolled my eyes" part hit close to home. I felt the same way about cable testers until one saved me three hours of tracing a bad run. It's humbling when the gimmick you laughed at turns out to be the obvious fix.

I kinda see it the other way though. Half the time I grab a tool like that it just ends up collecting dust after the first week.
