Had a server in a Boston data center start beeping like crazy because the thermal paste on one CPU was basically dust.

We pulled it, cleaned it off with some Arctic Silver remover, and put new paste on (just a pea-sized drop, you know). Has anyone else seen thermal compound fail that completely after only about 18 months?

Thermal paste turning to dust is a new one for me.

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I found a petrified tube of super glue in an old toolbox. Thing was solid as a rock.

Found a tube of Arctic Silver in my old PC parts bin last year, it was like gray chalk inside. Had to be from my first build back in like 2008. Opened it up and it just puffed out all over my desk. That stuff is not supposed to have a shelf life, but I guess everything dries out eventually.
