Wasted $8K on a bad HVAC system for my strip mall

Back in 2019 I bought a used rooftop unit from a guy on Craigslist for a 2,000 sq ft space in Austin. It broke down completely after 3 months and the repair guy said it was basically junk from the start. Any commercial landlords here ever cheap out on mechanicals and regret it big time?

Wait, is it really that big of a deal? I mean, 8K is a lot of money sure, but things break sometimes. You bought a used unit off Craigslist... that's kind of rolling the dice from the start, not some big life lesson.

My buddy Mike bought a used motorcycle off Craigslist once, a 2016 Yamaha R6 for about 7 grand. First week, the transmission basically grenaded on the highway, needed a whole new gearbox. Cost him almost 4 grand to get it fixed, plus he was out a bike for a month. He tried to go back to the seller, but surprise surprise the number was dead and the guy had ghosted him. So yeah, buying used from some random dude on the internet is definitely rolling the dice, but 8K is still a brutal loss for most people. It's not a life lesson so much as a really expensive reminder to do a full mechanical check first.
