Vent: my dive knife kept getting snagged, switched to a $10 strap trick
My knife sheath kept catching on wreck netting off Morehead City. Tried all the fancy mounts, nothing held. Wrapped a bungee cord around my tank band twice and it stays put. Anyone else rig something janky that just works?
Wrap the bungee so the hook faces down, not in, or it can pop loose when the band stretches at depth. Sounds janky but that trick has held for me on plenty of dives.
The hook facing down thing is SO real. Everyone I see at the shop clips theirs with the hook pointing in, and every single one of them wonders why their band keeps slipping off after a few deep dives. @shane_moore87 is right that it looks janky, I laughed the first time I saw it too, but physics does not care about looks. When the band stretches at depth, the hook gets pulled toward the point of most tension, and if that hook is facing inward it just walks itself right out of the loop. Facing it down keeps the load pulling the hook tighter into the wrap instead of prying it open. I have run mine like that for two seasons now, probably 60 plus dives, and never had a pop. Give it one trip and you will never go back.
