Shoutout to the old timer who called me out for being cocky near the prop
About three months back I was doing a hull inspection on a workboat in the Gulf, around Venice, Louisiana. This older diver, must have been pushing 60, was topside tending while I was bragging over comms about how fast I could finish the grid. He just let me run my mouth for a bit, then said over the radio, 'That's real cute, son. The water doesn't care how quick you think you are.' I laughed it off until I snagged my hose on a stray cable that wasn't on the survey. Took me about 20 frantic minutes to work it loose while he stayed quiet, only telling me to breathe and backtrack my own path. When I surfaced he handed me a Gatorade and said, 'Now you know the difference between speed and smart.' No lecture, no gloating, just that one line. Has anyone else had a moment where a veteran diver shut you down in a way that stuck with you longer than any cert course ever did?
