Serious question, why does everyone push the bailout bottle as the only backup plan?
I used to roll my eyes at the old timers in Morgan City who kept a spare second stage on a necklace instead of a full bailout rig. Figured it was just stubborn habit from the 80s and that a proper 40 cf bottle was the only way to be safe on a working dive. Then two years ago on a pipeline job in 60 feet near Galveston, my primary regulator free flowed hard while I was bellied out on the pipe and that little necklace bottle got me to the surface without sharing air. The whole thing lasted maybe 25 seconds but it felt like a lot longer than that. Now I run both, a 40 on my back and a pony stage tied off, because the free flow was from a piece of trash that got past the filter. Anyone else carry a secondary second stage like that, or am I just adding gear I don't need?
