Helmet purge valve stuck at 60 feet, I shot to the surface in Mobile Bay, but was that the right call?
I was doing a hull inspection on a barge near the Mobile River delta when my Desco pot helmet's exhaust valve jammed open and my suit started inflating fast, I dumped my weights and rode it up because I panicked, but the safety guy said I should've stayed and pinched the hose instead, so which is worse: a quick uncontrolled ascent or risking a squeeze trying to fix it on the bottom?

Did the safety guy ever actually try pinching a hose at 60 feet with a helmet that's blowing up around your head? Taking that extra minute to mess with the hose means you're fighting the suit, your mask is fogging, and you could end up head down and not even know which way is up. A fast ride to the surface gets you beat up and maybe bent, but staying down there while your gear is failing is how guys drown.
