Helmet purge valve stuck at 60 feet, I shot to the surface in Mobile Bay, but was that the right call?

I was doing a hull inspection on a barge near the Mobile River delta when my Desco pot helmet's exhaust valve jammed open and my suit started inflating fast, I dumped my weights and rode it up because I panicked, but the safety guy said I should've stayed and pinched the hose instead, so which is worse: a quick uncontrolled ascent or risking a squeeze trying to fix it on the bottom?
