That buddy who swore reading DC vs Marvel in release order was the only way

My friend Mark told me I had to read every DC and Marvel comic from 1985 in release order to 'get' the crossovers, so I spent 3 months tracking down 200 issues for just that year. Turned out half the tie-ins were filler and I could have just read the main event books for the full story. Has anyone else fallen for a 'completionist' reading order that was way overkill?

lol yeah but nobody talks about how half those "essential" tie-ins were just writers trying to hit their page count for the month.

Oh man, I totally fell for this with the Batman Knightfall saga. Someone convinced me I had to read every single tie-in issue from the different Bat-books to get the full story on Bane breaking Batman's back. I spent like two weeks reading filler about random street-level gang wars and a weird cult that went nowhere. Turned out I could have just read the main three volumes and saved myself about forty issues of total fluff.
