Spent 6 hours tracking down a single variant cover in a long box

I was digging through a shop's back issues last Saturday trying to find that 1993 Spider-Man 2099 with the gold foil logo, and I swear I went through 8 long boxes before I spotted it wedged between two copies of X-Force. The shop owner said he'd pulled it out earlier but someone must have shoved it back in the wrong spot, which made me wonder how many good books get lost this way. Do you guys organize your personal collection by title or just toss everything in boxes and hope for the best?

Wait, do y'all actually sort by title or just raw dog it into the boxes and pray nothing's bent? I sort by publisher then title, but that pure chaos method you mentioned sounds like a ticking time bomb for lost books.

Organize by genre first, then alphabetically by author. Thats the only way I've done it for years without losing anything. @victorclark your publisher method is solid too but I would go insane trying to remember what Random House books I own. Just make sure you label the boxes on the side not the top so you can read them when theyre stacked three high.
