Can we talk about how digital comics delete your notes?

I use the ComiXology app on my iPad to read my pull list, and last Tuesday a routine app update wiped ALL my highlighted panels and margin notes from 300+ issues. I spent the next 3 hours trying to restore everything from cloud backups, but the sync just kept failing. Has anyone else lost their annotations this way, and is there a better app that actually protects your scribbles?

1920s newspapers had the same problem, only the clippings all turned yellow and crumbled instead.
