Unpopular opinion: my uncle's "never clean your burr grinder" tip wrecked 3 months of coffee
My uncle has been roasting his own beans in his garage in Sacramento for like 15 years, so when he said never open up your burr grinder because you'll mess up the calibration, I believed him. For 3 months my pour overs tasted flat and kinda muddy and I kept blaming my water and my beans. Then I finally cracked open the grinder and found a full gram of old grounds packed behind the burr, some of it looking straight up oily and stale. I brushed it out, ran some instant rice through it, and the very next cup tasted like an actual blueberry muffin instead of wet cardboard. So yeah, the calibration thing is real but so is old coffee rot. Anyone else got a relative whose coffee advice turned out to be half wrong?
