Took me 4 trips to realize my grinder was set for espresso the whole time
Bought a used Baratza Encore from a buddy in Portland last month. He told me he'd cleaned it but I never bothered checking the burr settings. I kept trying to brew pour over in my Chemex and every cup came out muddy and bitter. After 4 bags of beans I finally looked at the dial and it was on like a 6. Set it to 18 and holy cow the difference. Has anyone else bought used gear and just assumed the settings were default? How do you reset someone else's machine without messing it up worse?

Four bags is a pricey way to figure that out. Did your buddy mention what grind size he was using for his own setup, or did he just hand it over and say good luck?
