TIL a roaster in Asheville told me my grinder was the problem, not my pour over
I was at this tiny roastery in Asheville last month and I got to talking to the owner about why my coffee at home always tasted flat and kind of muddy no matter what beans I bought. I had been blaming my pour over technique for like 6 months, watching videos, adjusting my temp, messing with ratios, all of it. He asked what grinder I used and I told him and he just kind of nodded and said "that's your issue, the burrs are worn and you're getting way too many fines." I was pretty bummed because I had just dropped $22 on a bag of their Ethiopian and I wanted to actually taste it the way it was meant to be. He ground a scoop for me on the spot and let me brew it there with their setup and the difference was honestly not even close, way sweeter and I could actually taste the blueberry note on the bag. So I bit the bullet and ordered a new hand grinder for $135 and man, the first cup I made when it showed up was a totally different drink. Has anyone else had someone point out that the gear was the problem the whole time? I felt kind of dumb for not thinking of it sooner.
