That one guy at the roastery who told me to stop weighing my beans
I was at a local roastery in Portland last month, just picking up my usual bag of Ethiopian. There was this older guy waiting too, and he saw me pull out my scale to weigh the beans before I even left the counter. He laughed and said you're missing the point, you're turning it into lab work. He wasn't rude about it, but he kept going for like 5 minutes about how I should just trust my eye and the smell. It stuck with me because now I catch myself second guessing every time I use the scale, like am I overdoing it? Has anyone else had a run in with the super traditional types who make you feel weird about being precise?

Man, that's a bummer. It's weird how one person's offhand comment can get in your head like that. You're not overdoing it, you're just being consistent.

Absolutely. One wrong word at the wrong time and it sticks like GLUE, even when everything else was fine. Consistency is just respect for yourself and others.
