Rant: I tried that "salt in your coffee beans" trick and it actually fixed my bitter brew
My morning coffee from my $20 Mr. Coffee has been tasting burnt for weeks. I read online that a tiny pinch of salt cuts the bitterness so I tried it with my usual Folgers. Just a few grains before brewing and the whole cup was smoother, no salty taste at all. Has anyone else tried this or am I late to the party?

Salt isn't the only trick worth trying here. A lot of folks don't realize that the grind size matters just as much as the coffee itself. If your Mr. Coffee is grinding too fine, that can make even Folgers taste like ash. You might also want to descale your machine with vinegar every month or two, because mineral buildup can ruin a brew. But your salt trick is solid, it really works.

Yeah the salt thing blew my mind too when I first tried it. I use a similar cheap drip machine and was about to throw it out until some guy at work told me about it. I actually started putting a tiny pinch right on top of the grounds before I pour the water in and it works just as good. One thing I found is you really gotta be careful not to use too much or it gets weird. I also started rinsing my carafe with hot water before brewing to keep old oils from building up and that helped a lot too.
