Rant: I think the whole 'single origin' thing is overrated

I was at a cafe in Austin last weekend and ordered their fancy $9 Ethiopian pour-over. It tasted like straight-up lemon juice, super sour and thin. The barista said that's the 'bright acidity' people love, but I just didn't enjoy it. I ended up mixing in a shot of espresso from their house blend to give it some body, which helped a lot. Has anyone else had a pricey single origin that just didn't work for them?

Yeah, it's like that with a lot of fancy stuff now. You pay extra for the 'pure' version, but sometimes the mix is just better (and cheaper). Happens with chocolate and craft beer too, honestly.

Just pay extra for lemon water.

The last time I tried a lemon water at a cafe it was 3.50 for lemon slices in a cup of their regular tap water which felt like a total scam honestly. I learned that you can just order a water and a side of lemon slices from the condiment bar at most places if you ask nice enough or just bring your own lemon wedge in a little baggie. That way you get the flavor without paying the upcharge for basically the same thing (just less fancy looking). Plus you can control how much lemon you want whereas some places dump half a lemon in there and it gets too sour for my taste. I've been doing the bring your own lemon thing at the diner near my work for years now and nobody has ever said a word about it. So yeah skip the extra charge and just hack the system a little.
