PSA: I was calibrating my grinder wrong for 2 years until a barista in Portland caught it

I always set my grinder by timing the pour, like 28 seconds for a double shot. Turns out I was ignoring the actual taste and just chasing the clock. A barista at Coava Coffee in Portland made me taste my own espresso next to theirs, and mine tasted like bitter dirt. He pointed out my grind was too fine, and ever since I've been dialing by taste first. Has anyone else been stuck on a myth that a timer or scale is more important than your tongue?
