Overheard a guy at the coffee shop yesterday say his espresso machine was a 'rip off' because it cost $3,200
I was standing in line at Blue Bottle in Brooklyn and this guy was complaining about his new machine to his friend. He said it was a waste because he only uses it twice a week. Made me think about how coffee culture has shifted - 10 years ago most people I knew were happy with a $30 Mr. Coffee drip machine. Now everyone feels like they need pro level gear to make a decent cup at home. Has anyone else noticed this change?

I read somewhere that people feel pressured to buy expensive gear because of all the latte art videos on Instagram. It's wild how a $30 Mr. Coffee was totally fine a decade ago.

$3,200 for a machine he uses twice a week? I literally had to sit down after reading that, @kim_brown. My buddy swore by his $40 DeLonghi from Target for like 8 years before it finally died. The pressure to get a home machine that costs as much as a used Honda is kind of insane. Your mileage may vary, but my 200 dollar Breville makes a latte that tastes just fine to me.
