My espresso machine pump died mid-pull yesterday morning

I was making my usual 6 AM double shot before work. Heard this weird grinding sound instead of the normal whir. Then nothing. Just water dripping out slowly. I took the whole back panel off and found a Ulka pump that looked original to the machine. 15 years old probably. Ended up driving to a local repair shop in Portland and spent $45 on a replacement. Installed it in my kitchen while my coffee got cold. Now it works but I'm wondering how long other parts will last. Anyone else have a machine fall apart piece by piece?

Yeah man, those Ulka pumps are pretty standard but they do crap out eventually. 15 years is a solid run for one though, I'd say you got your money's worth. The thing with espresso machines is they're kind of like cars, once one part goes it can feel like a domino effect. But honestly, if the rest of the machine was taken care of, the other parts like the boiler and grouphead should have plenty of life left. I'd just keep using it and not worry too much, but maybe start saving a little cash for a new machine down the road if this one starts acting up again.

My Bezzera ate its Ulka pump at year 12 and I had the same thought about the whole machine falling apart, but its been running like a champ for 4 years post swap. Totally agree on the piece of mind thing, that little emergency fund is a lifesaver when espresso is life.
