My dad's offhand comment about his old percolator got me thinking
I was over at my parent's house last weekend and my dad pulled out his old stovetop percolator from the 70s. He said something like 'you kids and your fancy machines, we just boiled water and it worked fine.' At first I laughed it off but later I realized he had a point. I've spent probably $400 on gear over the last 2 years trying to dial in the perfect pour over. Meanwhile his coffee was honestly just fine and he didn't stress about it at all. It made me wonder if I've been overcomplicating things just for the sake of having a hobby. Has anyone else ever went back to a simpler setup and actually liked it more?

$400 on gear and you're just now questioning it?

Yeah I used to think that kind of cash was crazy for gear too. But then I borrowed a buddy's high end setup once and it was night and day difference. @davis.keith I get where you're coming from though, because I was exactly the same way until I actually felt what good quality does for you. It's not just about looking cool, it's about how much easier and less frustrating everything becomes. Sometimes you don't know what you're missing until you actually try it yourself.
