Hit 100 bags in my freezer and my roommate staged an intervention
I was cleaning out the kitchen last Tuesday and counted 100 zip bags of single origin beans stacked in the freezer door, going back to a Colombia roast from 14 months ago. My roommate walked in, looked at the pile, and asked if I was prepping for something. I just stood there holding a bag from a tiny roaster in Portland that I forgot I even bought. Now I have a rule where anything older than 6 weeks gets brewed as cold brew. How do you all deal with the freezer stash, do you date and rotate or just let it pile up?
Dates are key but the real trick is a system, not just scribbling on bags. You need to know the roast date, not the freeze date, since beans keep way longer frozen than sitting on a shelf. @jordanr89 the honest answer is you don't find anything if it's a free for all, which is exactly how I ended up with 100 bags. What worked for me was a cheap label maker and a sharpie, write the roast date on the bag before it goes in, then stack oldest in front. Six weeks is a solid cutoff for pour over but frozen beans can hold up way longer if they went in fresh, so don't toss stuff just because it's old. lmao the intervention was probably fair though.
