Dropped $210 on a hand grinder after 4 years of saying my $40 one was fine, and my first cup with it made me feel like a fool
I swore up and down that burr grinders were overpriced hype, mostly because the blade grinder I got at a garage sale in 2019 made coffee that tasted fine to me. Then a coworker handed me a cup from his setup at our shop on a slow Friday, and I could actually taste the difference, like someone turned the volume up on the same song. Three days later I ordered a $210 hand grinder, and the first batch I made at home tasted so much cleaner that my old grinder went straight into a donation box. My wife says I'm smug now, which is fair. For folks who held out as long as I did, what finally pushed you over the edge, or are you still grinding away with the cheap one?
Did your buddy at the shop ever tell you how much he spent, or just hand you the cup and watch your face change? My buddy went through the same thing, swore his $30 blade grinder was fine for years, then his brother in law made him a pour over at Thanksgiving and he ordered a grinder that night (his wife still brings it up).
