Thinking back to my first Python class at the community college

This older guy named Carl sat next to me and got stuck on a simple loop for like 20 minutes. He finally turned and said, 'I think my brain just doesn't work this way.' I told him to just write it out on paper first, step by step, and it clicked for him. What was the first coding problem that made you feel totally stuck?

That paper trick is a classic move. What was the actual loop problem that had Carl so blocked? Sometimes the simplest syntax trips people up the most.

You said the simplest syntax trips people up, but I totally disagree. The real problem is almost never the syntax itself. It's that people jump into writing code before they even know what the loop should do. They don't think it through on paper first. So they stare at the screen trying to fix the wrong thing. The syntax error is just a side effect of a bigger planning mistake. That's why the paper trick works, it forces you to solve the actual logic.

Twenty minutes on a simple loop? That's brutal.
