Had to pick between following a tutorial line by line or just messing around on my own

I spent like 2 hours on a Python tutorial last night and barely remembered anything, so this morning I just tried building a simple tip calculator from scratch. Has anyone else found that you learn way more when you ditch the guided stuff and just break things yourself?

Oh man, I had a buddy who was trying to learn guitar from YouTube tutorials and just gave up after a week. He said he was spending all his time copying chords and strumming patterns but none of it stuck. So he just started playing random notes and trying to figure out simple songs by ear, and now he can jam out pretty well. It's like your brain actually has to struggle a little to make the connections, right? Following a tutorial is just too easy, you don't really learn the why behind the steps.

Gotta agree with this completely. I tried learning piano from a book once and it was the same thing, just copying notes without any feel for why they worked together. Once I just started messing around and trying to match melodies I heard in my head, everything clicked way faster.
